Abstract: A novel method, named as temperature prpgrammed decomposition colorimetric method (TPDE-CM), was employed to explore the special decomposition of KNO3 at low temperature on inorganic porous materials such as alumina, titania and silica along with NaY, KY, Kβ zeolites as well as MCM-41 mesoporous molecular sieve. Many factors such as surface acidity, octahedral vacant site in the structure of support, geometric-chemical micro-environment provided by the inorganic porous materials, along with their influences on the decomposition of KNO3 at low temperature were examined. It was firstly revealed that KNO3 began to decompose in the range of 400~500 K upon loaded on these inorganic supports resulting from a special interaction between KNO3 and the surface of porous materials. Moreover, some of the KNO3 loaded on alumina had been decomposed even at room temperature during the preparation process, which would be an important factor affecting the resulting strong basicity and/or superbasicity of KNO3/Al2O3 catalysts, although a further investigation is needed to explore the reason. Based on the results reported in this paper, TPDE-CM method is proven to be a powerful novel technique with a high sensitivity for the investigation on the new solid strong bases or superbases derived from KNO3 supported on porous materials.
