Abstract: Two dinuclear complexes [Tb(4-BrBA)2(Phen)(NO3)]2 (1) [Tb(4-BrBA)3(2,2′-bipy)(H2O)]2·2H2O (2) (4-BrBA=4-bromobenzoate, Phen=1,10-phenanthroline, 2,2′-bipy=2,2′-bipyridine ) have been obtained. The two complexes were characterized by X-ray single-crystal diffraction. The two complexes are dimer with an inversion center. In complex 1, two Tb3+ ions are linked by 4-BrBA ligands in bridging-bidentate and bridging-chelating coordination modes. Each Tb3+ ion is nine-coordinated with two nitrogen atoms of Phen molecule, two oxygen atoms of nitrate and five oxygen atoms of four 4-BrBA ligands. In complex 2, two Tb3+ ions are linked by 4-BrBA ligands in bridging-bidentate coordination mode. Each Tb3+ ion is eight-coordinated with two nitrogen atoms of 2,2′-bipy molecule, one oxygen atom of water molecule, four oxygen atoms of four bridging-bidentate 4-BrBA ligands and one oxygen atom of monodentate 4-BrBA ligand. In complex 2, hydrogen bonds are formed between free water molecules, coordinated water molecules and 4-BrBA ligands, and the 1-D chain structure is formed by hydrogen bonds. The two complexes exhibit strong green fluorescence under ultraviolet light and the fluorescence spectrums both have four peaks at 490, 545, 585, and 621 nm, the emission caused by 5D4 → 7Fj(j=6~3) transitions of Tb3+ ion.
