Abstract: γ-Al2O3 nanocrystals were prepared by hydrothermal assisted sol-gel method using aluminum isopropoxide (Al(OC3H7-i)3) as raw materials. The structure, morphology, size and luminescence property of these nanocrystals were investigated by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and photoluminescence spectra (PL). The results showed that the prepared γ-Al2O3 nanocrystals were well dispersed and highly crystallized, the prepared nanocrystals exhibited a strong and wide photoluminescence band in the wavelength range of 300~600 nm, and the main emission is at 397 nm, and the PL band of γ-Al2O3 nanocrystals may be attributed to the oxygen vacancies defect levels (F+ centers). The γ-Al2O3 nanocrystals might open up promising applications in many fields due to their unique properties and potentials quite different from those of the bulk counterparts.
